Oracle Wants To Be The Apple Of The Enterprise, But It Just Became IBM

Larry Ellison has always wanted to be the Steve Jobs of the enterprise. With this morning’s announcement that Oracle will buy Sun Microsystems for $7.4 billion, he took a big step towards making Oracle more of a soup-to-nuts provider of enterprise technology. With Sun, he will now be able to build and package together everything from chips and servers to operating systems, Java middleware, databases, and enterprise applications. Continue reading it here.

A community weighs the pros and cons of Oracle’s new claim on Java.

While Oracle and Sun Microsystems are hailing Oracle’s purchase of Sun as a big boost for Java, others are not so sure. Some with stake in the Java ecosystem are questioning what kind of control Oracle might try to exercise over the popular software development platform, which has driven enterprise applications since its debut in 1995. Oracle may have decided to buy Sun Microsystems because it was worth far more to the database market leader than it was to IBM. It’s not a question of the price — at $7.4 billion, Oracle didn’t agree to pay much more than what IBM reportedly was considering. But Oracle may have more use for Sun’s technology than IBM ever did.
